We've already discovered that everyone has a different vision of the American dream.  After reading through some of the dreams of the notable Americans from Forbes, collect and post your thoughts about the American dream.  Consider the following.

- What are some common ideas/themes you've noticed?  Why do you think these keep popping up?
- What, if anything in these dreams, surprised you?  Why?
- Did you find anything you don't believe should be part of the American dream?  What?  Why should it not be part of the dream?
- What is your vision of the American Dream, and how closely does your vision align with what you've read today?
- Whose dream is most like yours?  Does this surprise you?  Explain.
- Has your dream changed during your life?  How?
- Is your dream achievable? Explain.
- Do all Americans have a chance at achieving their dreams?  Explain.
- What happens to the dream when times turn bad?  Is this positive or negative?  Explain.

to achieve freedom and peace is pretty common. I think they keep popping up because that's what most people want, to be able to do what they want, and have peace. My vision of the American dream is to have a good job, a normal sized family, a house, peace, freedom. I think it's pretty close to what everyone else wants. My dream has changed, probably 100 times. People change their mind on what they want, and how they want to get it. I wanted to be a princess when i was a kid, i know now, that most likely won't happen. I think all Americans have a chance, because if you work hard enough, and commit yourself to what you want, you will get it in some form.

When i was younger my idea of the American dream was being a police officer and being the richest man alive. Of course that is not realistic or even achievable, in most cases. But now my idea of the American dream is just having a good job to support a future family that i may have; settling down, having one or two kids and owning a house in the suburbs of a bigger city. Even though this is my dream now, I can guarantee you that even in the nest few years it will change to something different.

The main common idea of peoples interpretations of the idea of " The American Dream", seems to revolve around materialistic things such as money, a nice big house, a nice car, the newest and greatest of technology. Another part of the population values the ideas of freedom, from freedom of religion, or freedom of speech. I agree with the general idea, that being successful and living a happy life is basically my main idea of what The American Dream is to me. My dream has never really changed, as this isnt that important to me. My dream is achievable. All americans do have the opportunity of achieving their dreams if they work hard for it. The dream seems to get more realistic as times get harder.

Everyone has a differant opinion of what the american dream is, but almost everyone seems to believe that it is acheivable through hard work and believing in yourself. In my own opinion, all the american dream seems to be is the fact that people are never satisfied with their life. Even the richest man on earth has his own dream and if he achieves it, he will change it to something differant. People like to complain about their lives, even when they have everything. I think that some dreams are worth having, such as finding true love or discovering how to cure cancer, but most dreams seem to be selfish desires to better a life that will never be satisfied. I myself am no differant. My current dream is to creat anti-matter and hold the world ransom so i can be supream ruler of the universe. This dream may well be achievable, but it will take many years and lots of angry words. Hopefully, my dream will not change and if it does, who cares? I will be ruling the world in blissfull happiness.

The economy appears to be a recurring theme. This seems accurate when considering most people's concept of the American Dream, but it's a bit depressing. Money is such an issue that little else is thought about. There are a few people who are more firmly concerned with the welfare of others, freedom, etc., but it seems like struggling to get by is a much more common issue.
My dream, American or otherwise, is to establish myself as an individual. It hasn't so much fluctuated as become more important to me throughout my life so far. I want to live for myself, as myself, on my terms. I'm not sure whose response is the most like mine, but I hope that everyone takes their aspirations seriously, because if they care about it enough they can probably achieve it.

The American Dream, simply, is fair chance to succeed for everyone. No matter what race, sex, sexual orientation, wealth, etc., everyone should be treated equal and have equal opportunity. I think Al Sharpton thinks sort of the same way I do. Money, in my opinion, should not be the main component to an individual's "American Dream". My dream is just to be happy as often as possible. Being rich isn't important to me. The American Dream is what you make it to be.

The american dream to where everyone one has there fair share of respect and wealth. I think thats it5 can be viewed as ones own dream and also the dream everyone as a whole. It used to be getting away from religous prosection but now i bieleve its just living a perfectly normal life. My dream has changed since i was a young kid since ive matured over time.As a kid it was somthing unrealistic but now it's just more achievable but a still a high goal.To achieve this everyone must work together and not just care about themselves but also others. Basically just making right decisions and doing what we know is right.

- What are some common ideas/themes you've noticed?
I noticed a lot of people had the idea that the American dream was different to each individual which I also agree with. Hugh Hefner brought up that American pop culture really promotes the American dream through media throughout the world. I think this is true because people come here thinking they will be able to get rich fast and successful because of a movie they saw.

- What, if anything in these dreams, surprised you? Why?

Hugh Hefner said that the Constitution assures everyone the American dream which surprised me because the Constitution also could maybe hold some people back from living their American Dream.

What is your vision of the American Dream, and how closely does your vision align with what you've read today?

I think your American dream really changes when your circumstances change. Someone who is wealthy might want want a perfect happy family and someone who has a happy family might want to be more stable financially.

- Has your dream changed during your life? How?
It has, I don't want to be the same thing that I did when I was little. Most people probably wanted to be a teacher when they were younger or something unachievable like a princess.

- Is your dream achievable? Explain.
I think my dream is definately achievable with hard work and a little luck.

- Do all Americans have a chance at achieving their dreams? Explain.
It really depends on the individual's dream but not ALL Americans will be able to achieve their dream. Maybe one wants to become president of the United States. And one wants to be financially sound. Some might be more realistic then others.

A common idea that I've noticed to be the American dream is to live for a life of happiness, freedom, and wealth. I think these keep popping up because of the dreams that the founding fathers wished for when they first founded America. To me, the American dream is to build a successful life and family. As a child I would dream of being a pyrotechnician due to the awesome thought of blowing stuff up, and of course the high salary. Americans have a huge chance of achieving their dreams, but most don't because they dream more than working towards their goals. When times turn bad, people may give up on their dreams, but that isn't always a bad thing because new dreams and goals can always be made.

I believe the American Dream is achievable for everyone; and I think that everyone has a separate dream or dream life that they fantasize about, but just like Jessie Jackson said, the American Dream is have equal opportunity to achieve anything that a person wants to achieve. Also, overtime people's dreams often change based on the situations that they are put in. It is not always easy to achieve the American Dream, but it is possible for everyone.

Question 1: Most people, I have noticed, believe the American dream is your goal in life and your freedom to take that goal. They also believe that you have to work hard to acheive this goal.

Question 4: I believe the American Dream is your set goal in life. I also believe, just like anything else, you have to work hard at this goal to acheive the goal.

Question 5: I think my dream is more close to Tyra Banks, granted she became a model to become a talk show host. I am in the process of training to do some competions next summer so I can gain money to save up for college to become a Cosmotoligist and/or and Early Childhood Development teacher and to have a family that I can take care of.

Question 6: Yes my dream has changed a lot. I remember in second grade all the way to my freshman year in highschool how I wanted to become a singer and tryout for American Idol just because my family and friends, sometimes strangers, thought I had an amazing voice. I remember singing infront of people and how I always got that happy feeling when they were happy with my sing/music. But then I realize the chance of me becoming a singer was very slime and I didn't want to travel around on tour all the time and not be able to see my family, or my friends. Then I found other things that I, and others, thought I was great at doing, like styling hair, make up and working with little childern with disability problems. I knew then, and there, that I wanted to make people happy, laugh, smile, and be greatful for themselves.

Question 7: I believe my dream is achievable as long as I try my hardest at working to acheive my goal and not slack off.

Question 8: I do believe anyone is able to achieve their goal not matter what it is. As long as they stick their mind to it, it's acheivable.

Question 9: When times turn bad I can be honest, I have no idea what will happen to their dream. This could be positive or negitive to the person. Watching the video before, it seemed to me, when times turned bad, that everyone worked harder at their goal and most Americans acheived their "American Dream". To my understanding, your goal can be achieved not matter what times are like.

In my opinion the American dream has changed greatly throught the years. A long time ago the American dream was having a big house with a white fence and 2.5 kids. But today the American dream to me has changed greatly. The dream in my opinion is everyone wanting a bunch of money and having all of the things they want and living a relaxed stress free lifestyle. I dont think that people will ever be done reaching for their dreams. There will always be more things out there that people want to have and cant live without.

It's funny that a lot of people think the American Dream should not be about materialistic things, but yet that's what most Americans these days want. For some people the Amercan Dream is simple, for others it could be considered practically impossible. For myself I think it's about having a goal in your life and pushing yourself to your maximum potential to try and reach that goal. I think every person could live by that even though we all have so many dreams.

Now i look at like and all i want to be is sucessful and have a great family and to be a lawyer. Intimes of hardships i believe that we, as a people, tend to become less selfish and start to enjoy the finer points in our lives.I think everyone as a kid has unrealistic valus and then when the mature they see the world as it really is. This is my american dream and what it used to be when I was a kid.

Everybody has a different opinion about "The American Dream" but it's basically about having the determination to achieve your goals and dreams. Everybody has a chance to achieve your dreams if you have the potential to believe in yourself, anything can happen. Do whatever makes you happy and then you can look back and say "I Did it, i accomplished my dream."

I think the most common dream that people have is to have a happy life, married with children, perfect house, good amount of money. It varies for everyone, though. For some, it's not about the material things. It's about living their life the way the want to, and becoming who they want to become. To me, my American Dream is to be sucessful, happily married, have a perfect house for my family, and a decent amount of money. It has changed probably a million times, but now that I'm more mature and I know what I want to do with my life, I think this is what I want -and hope- to accomplish.

The American Dream is exactly how it reads. It is a dream that people inside and outside of America have that if they move here or change how they live here, that success will ensue automatically. It is a dream that you will be truly happy in life with material possesions when really the American Dream is just a theoretical scam to keep our economy flowing, by pushing the concept of material possesions at people claiming they will give them happiness. Truth be told, I believe the government invented the American Dream just to torture us and make us think our lives aren't worth living.

They should all be able to achieve the goal they want to achieve by actually trying and staying in a good state of mind. When times turn bad its best to stay strong and think about the better things in life. My American Dream has stayed the same but there are somethings that may change.

When people are asked about the American Dream they always mention materials, for and against. About half I noticed thought it was about having and doing what you want and the other half was about working your hardest at what you do. When I was a kid I wanted to be an artist just like my art teacher. Do I still want to be one? No, but I'm good at it. I believe that your dream will change a few times in your life depending what happens in it. I went through a million possibilites as what I wanted to do with life and last year I finally figured out my dream. I want to work hard and become a writer, get married and eventually have one or two kids. It's nothing too big but hey it works for me.

The American Dream is an opportunity to whatever you want to do. I think taht pops up because that is what it is. It is an opportunity. It is an opportunity to let people do things in their life. Like with little kids, they want to have really cool jobs like being an athelete or an astronaut. Some of them will actually acheive their dream job while others will change it over the years. Those who take the risk to go after the opportunity will either make it or not.

When reading the responces that were given in the Forbes, I noticed that many people agreed that the American dream does change when things aren't going as great as we would like them too. As I read on, i was thinking about how all of these intervied people are now famous and, most likely, achieved their goals in life. My person dream has changed throughout life because it has become more realistic as to what I can do and become. After all, no everyone can become the next best Brett Favre (without all of the women). I believe that everyone does have a chance to achieve the American dream because you just need to be a go getter and put effort tword you goal. If you do this, nothing will be able to stop you from what you want. You just have to decide how much you want it.

The most common and and most thought to be "American Dream", is to have a big house in a populated area, have the perfect son and daughter and be a successful person in business, or at least earn a hefty income. All things materialistic are associated with the "American Dream". At a younger age, i thought this way. I wanted the most money and the fanciest of things. Now I think that the true dream is to simply be happy. To be happy with what you do, the decisions you make, and the outcome.

I think everyone's dream changes over time, when i was young i wanted to be a singer but once i grew up it changed to something more possible and realistic. Some of the dreams that I noticed from people that I knew from shows and life stories of their success were surpriseingly very intense and deep in how they said that in their mind the american dream should be and how people today are so lucky on how they didn't work for their dream but inherited the dream. I think that these comments keep coming up because now a days a lot of people think a like and respond together in most terms. The reason is the time in the economy is different now than what they used to so people are trying to do things differently to help themselvs. My dream was to become a pro golfer but when I started to grow up I now know that you need to make sacrafices to have things and you have to live in your means and build off of that.

People believ that the american dream is noth something can you can just wish for it has to be something that you achieve in the time you are there. When you think of the American dream most people think it is more about possestions and property, in high site people come to understand that it should be more focused on life liberty and the persuiet of happiness.People believe in the american dream because it is something they want and something that they hope to acomplish in the near future or have already acomplished. It surprised me that more people are going for the moral standers than they are for the money and the wealth and such. I thought that people would have thought that the american dream was that a person was wealthy and had a family and a big house with nice things and such but most people decided that it was better to have the things that were actually achivable to them such as a good family and good morals and have freedom. I do believe that my dream has changed indeed. I dont just expect things i work for them and i feel that that is part of the american dream, that a person should work for what they want and in time they will get what they want if they deserve it. I think that over time many peoples take on the american dream will change and it probably wont just change once it will change multable times in order to fit the world we are living in at that point in time. I also think that Americans can achieve their dream if they really want it and i do believe that if it is right and if it is what they think is right it will be easy for them to achieve it.

The most common idea that i saw would be that freedom is the base of the american dream. I was always told the american dream was to have complete freedom and peace in the nation, but now i see the american dream is just something for people to believe that the nation is giving us. We truely don't have complete freedom like what people try saying but we do have more freedom then most countries do in the world. When the nation is having a hardship people lower their standards for the dream the set the dream on smaller things that are more likely to be accomplished.

The American Dream
I believe that the idea of The American Dream differs for everyone. Some of the articles I read said owning a house, car, or your own business was the American Dream. Others said it was having freedom of speech and the freedom to do what you want. Something common I found between many of the articles is the material aspect of owning your own things. The writers said that America is a place to pursue your own vision which means everyone should have a different, personal dream. MY dream is to have the chance to attend college and start a career and family. I do believe that many people have closely related dreams to mine. The Dream may or may not be achievable for everyone. There should be a chance for every human being to fulfill their dream, but at the same time you need to want it bad enough to work hard for it and if you don’t then your dream could slip away.

There were a few people who had dreams like mine. It did not surprise me to find that other people shared a similar dream to me. My dream has changed in the way that i no longer think that the American dream is all about material items. I think my dreams are achievable. I think anyone can achieve their dreams as long as they stick to it and never give up. When times turn bad, people change their dreams to make them more achievable. I think it's negative to change your dream when times get hard because it means that you're settling for something rather than reaching for an actual goal.

What I noticed about others American Dreams was there was a lot of talk about peace and freedom. Everyone's American Dreams were different but the same theme was peace and freedom. What I am wondering is can we ever acheive the dream? If our dream is always changing then the dream will never be satisfied. Either we want more freedom or peace or money. The American dream
It’s odd at how many people think that the American dream is a perfect life where nothing happens be bad, but some people such as Chuck Norris say that the American dream was achieved when the forefathers of the country decided to fight for their own freedom and having it today is a part of the American dream. Elaine Chao thinks differently, she states that the American dream is what the heart desired and they struggle to get it. These are the people that I looked at we did it seemed to me that their look at the American dream is very different. I personally think that the American dream can never be achieved because we all are humans we never stop at the end of the road of our dream. When we went to the moon, we didn’t stop at that we continued the space expedition. In the American dream it is merely nothing but a hope that has been gathered to make a large and very vague image that seems to be able to grasp, but in reality, we are simply not happy with what we get in the end, thus continuing the cycle.

The American dream is about having things like a house, car, a good education, a pet, the freedom to do what we please, to have things at our access at all times, if we want it, we can get it. The American dream is also about achieving success, and our goals, without goals we don’t have initiative. Its gaining status through ones achievements. The american dream is different for every person, it all depends on what they want to make of themselves and how much effort they put into that dream.

Lots of people think that the american dream is to have a lot of money and friends, a nice family, and to succeed in their line of work. These ideas keep popping up because money, friends, and family are probably the three most important things to have in today's society. My dream is to make a lot of money and have a family. It's definitely changed throughout my life; when i was little, i wanted nothing more than to be one of those Jedi guys from Star Wars. I think my dream of being rich and having a family is achievable. I think that if most people set their minds to it, their dream is achievable. When times turn bad, people's dreams tend to change according to the situation. For instance, in the days of slavery, lots of slaves probably dreamed just to be free and actually have a paying job.

Every one person has their own thought of the American Dream. It seemed as if earlier on in the days it was basically to one to make a living to where you were financially stable and had enough food and supplies to support yourself and family. Now a days people keep building off of what they achieve. It seems like there really isn't an American Dream anymore in the present, because the way I personally see it if it is a specific kind of dream there is an ending point and your happy. In todays days it seems like people are never happy with what they have. They dream of a future they want and when they achieve it they always want something else. People are never happy with what they have and since it's how it is now, the future isn't going to be any better and change. I believe this is because back then there wasn't all these new things coming out every couple months. Back then they had little to use and just being able to survive safely and healthy was good enough then. People then had little to feed off of and appreciatted more of the littler things than now in todays time. If people back then lived in todays world they would be set. They would have everything already and life would be easier, yet confusing because of all the new technology we have. Bottom line people now a day I feel don't really appreciate what they have and just want more and more and more.

Back then I could see people believing in the perfect family with the 2 kids, Nice cars and a white picket fence but now peoples lifes are content if they have enough money to support there families and be happy then its enough for them. I see more people more worried about peace and love and happiness and the people I know just make enough money to survive which to them is enough.

The American Dream is different for everyone either it is being free or having the perfect life. It is all up to the person and their goal in life. If it would be either having a big house in the city with a great paying job and a spouse that love you and children that don't talk back. I don't know if the American Dream is still around today. If I had to come up with a dream it would be granduate high school get into my dream college find the perfect guy live on the farm raise beef cattle and pigs or a dairy farm. Have children and then retire and travel the world. That would be my dream but I just want to finish high school right now. I think people try so hard to find there dream but you never know.

-Some common things that would come up is that the American Dream is all about just living your life and being free from everything but the truth is everything is not simple, it can be very challenging.
-My vision of the American dream is to have a decent job and be able to financially help my future family and be living in a decent sized house. And with that it will take a lot of work cause not everything in life is easy and you are going to need to work at it in order to get where you want to be in life.
-My dream has only changed a little bit but, the majority of it has still remained the same. The only thing that changed was the goal for the type of job that I would most likely want to work towards as my life continues on and that would be becoming a part of the Forensics field or a beautician.
-I believe my dream is achievable because once I go to college, I’m pretty sure that I can explore and keep working up towards my goals in life.
-I believe that all americans do have a chance of achieving their dreams but they have to be totally dedicated to what their belief is otherwise they just seem lazy and not trying to do enough to get their dream achieved which they cant blame anyone else for.
